Why is it so difficult to turn on a water heater?

Hot water woes are one of the least desirable home headaches. You can
attempt to handle the repair yourself or
call a pro (NE Ohio only).

When your water heater will not fire up there are a few things you can try
to rectify the problem. First, determine if it is gas or electric. If it electric it
can only be a breaker or a inoperable heating element.

For gas, try the following (Details below);
  1. Make sure the gas is on to the water heater.
  2. Water heaters need a continuous supply of fresh air-check to see
there are no obstructions (dust, boxes, junk) at the bottom of the
    water heater.
  3. The thermocouple may be at fault (very common)
  4. May be a thermostat or computer brain ailment if a newer heater.
  5. Exhaust vent may be blocked or improperly sized.
How to Proceed? (Photos can be referenced in clockwise direction.)

  1. Gas Line on or Off. Check to make sure the gas cock valve is in the "on"
position. Check to see if the gas is on/off at the meter.
  2. Remove dust, boxes and anything else that may restrict the flow of air
  3. Thermocouple replacement is not a difficult job.
  4. Thermostat or controller brain repair.  If it is a electronic controller there are
diagnostic tools to test the equipment. Locate the manufacturer and inquire
on how to test the unit.
  5. Exhaust vent. Check the entire line, chimney int/ext for blockage.
  6. Once you have found the issue the instructions to turn on a water heater
are found on the water heater. Simply follow the instructions, it usually takes
    less than 5 minutes.
