Decks are always a summer favorite. Sitting on the deck with friends and family, on the grill and a pitcher of lemonade.
When it some to decks we get many questions about the pros and cons of PTP (pressure-treated pine) versus the man-made wood composite products, such as Trex, Certainteed, TimberTech and others. The short answer is the composite products are more expensive. They look great, don’t splinter and weather well–at least for now. Only time will tell how the composites stack up against pressure-treated wood.
One drawback to composite decks is algae and mildew build up. The composites come in may varieties and the mildew issue will vary. However, with some brands it can be a moldy, smelly problem –not to mention a slippery one. There are spray on products that will arrest the growth of spores. It is always a good idea to check with the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation before making a buying decision.
